Palma - A modern capital with tradition

The large bay of Palma, in the south-west of Majorca shelters the capital of the ancient kingdom. Nearly half the Majorcan population lives in the vibrant metropolis where the international flair and the Mediterranean character are banded together. Palma is the economic and cultural centre and the capital, not only of Majorca, the largest of the Balearics islands, but also of the smaller islands of the archipelago: Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Cabrera.
Palma is a town of contrasts: on the one hand it is a modern metropolis with animated goings-on in the streets, representative buildings of international companies and all sorts of historic sites. The lively bustle in the modern residential and business quarters as well as the popular nightlife procures to the „new Barcelona" a complete distinctive charme. On the other hand Palma offers also a lovely Old town where the construction boom and the tourism seem to have gone past without a trace. The unaltered life of the Majorcans can be observed at any street corner. Traditions and habits are maintained just as the numerous gorgeous monuments of the world cultural heritage. The focus of the city is the splendid cathedral next to the Almudaina-palace, the official residence of the Spanish King Juan Carlos.
The airport of Palma has developed during the last years to become one of Europe's most important crosspoints. Especially the low-priced Airlines have incorporated Palma in their air routes, in such a way as to enable you to get to the island at any time, easily, quickly and at a cheap rate. Thus you could for instance spontaneously pass a weekend at your holiday residence and enjoy a break of some relaxed hours, away from stress and hectic rush!
